Downtown Development
Renovations and development in Downtown Fort Smith are honoring our city’s rich history. Recently completed projects include more than $55 million in improvements to the Fort Smith Convention Center, Riverfront Development and Garrison Avenue.

The expanded Convention Center and Riverfront Development are a tremendous asset to the exploding tourist and convention market - not to mention a valuable resource to the more than 300,000 Greater Fort Smith Region residents. Approximately $4.2 million in Garrison Avenue Streetscape improvements - including landscaping, sidewalks and signage - have further enhanced a rejuvenated Downtown Fort Smith.

A unique part of Downtown Fort Smith is the Belle Grove Historic District. Comprising a 22-square block area, the beautiful Belle Grove District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the early 1970s and is the largest and oldest such district in Arkansas.

Since then, nearly 25 homes that span 130 years of architectural styles have been restored. The City of Fort Smith has also pledged more than $1.2 million to restore the brick streets in the district.
