Interstates and Highways

The Greater Fort Smith Region is served and easily accessed by Interstate 40 - the nation’s main east/west road covering North Carolina to California.
The recent opening of the I-540 extension also allows for easy north/south travel especially between the Greater Fort Smith Region and Northwest Arkansas including Fayetteville, Rogers and Bentonville.
The Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce is also working with city leaders and state officials extensively in the development of I-49. When completed, the Interstate will open emerging business markets and access in Central and South America, Canadian markets and major Mid-American trading centers from Texas to Louisiana to Chicago, Illinois.
The area is also serviced by national Highways 64, 71 and 271.

Barge and River Transit

The Port of Fort Smith on the Arkansas River offers a 9-foot ice-free channel, open year-round with low cost transportation by barge between Fort Smith and all points reached by navigable waterways.
The port is available by numerous carriers that serve Fort Smith. The public port in Fort Smith is in operation with two on-site warehouses and has two docks and two cranes.
The Port of Fort Smith is part of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System that runs through the heart of the nation. The waterway not only connects the Greater Fort Smith Region to the ports of the world but also with America’s entire inland waterway system from Houston to New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Minneapolis.
Five Rivers Distribution in Van Buren has the newest intermodal port facility on the Arkansas River System. Five Rivers is located at River Mile 299, near Interstate I-540 and Interstate I-40, and is served by the Union Pacific and A&M Railroads.
Five Rivers features three handling docks, one which is covered and served by a 60,000 lb. overhead crane that traverses the length of the 76,500 square foot climate-controlled US Customs Bonded Warehouse.

Public Transportation
Fort Smith Public Transit operates 20-passenger mini-buses that run Monday-Saturday. The service offers curb-to-curb service along four routes through the city with all four having a common point at Central Mall. Public Transit also operates a 25-seat trolley that travels through Fort Smith’s downtown and historic districts.
