On Saturday, February 18, 2012, the American Advertising Federation-Fort Smith presented its 2012 ADDY® Awards for advertising creative excellence, which was attended by members and guests in advertising, business owners and students in the Greater Fort Smith Region.
 
What If Creative took home an ADDY Award for every one of the (13) entries submitted to the competition this year as well as the “Best in Show.”

This event is presented by 360 Leadership Series, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide professional development, networking opportunities, and spiritual growth for River Valley professionals.

The increasing number of graduates at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith has caused UAFS officials to divide the May 5 spring commencement program into two separate ceremonies, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

On Saturday, February 25, AmeriCorps volunteers will be sponsoring a day of service in Fort Smith.

From 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at a variety of locations AmeriCorps teams will be working alongside neighborhood volunteers to help remove non-native invasive plants and spread gravel on the trail at the Ruth Armstrong Nature area, and pick up litter at a number of Parks locations. If enough local residents volunteer, crews would like to clear gravel and dirt off the Massard Road and Chad Colley Boulevard trails.

Another round of public information meetings is announced in anticipation of the March 13 sales tax election.


So far, between Mayor Sandy Sanders, City Administrator Ray Gosack, Fort Smith Fire Department Chief Mike Richards and the director of Fort Smith Parks & Recreation, Mike Alsup, nearly two dozen civic club presentations and forums have been, or will be, conducted.

During the past three (3) weeks, City of Fort Smith Street and Traffic Control Department staffers have been conducting night-time field inspections of street lights, to ensure that each lamp is working properly.

Most citizens may not realize that OG&E and Arkansas Valley Electric maintain the fixtures that illuminate Fort Smith streets and that the City of Fort Smith pays an average of $175 per year for each of the 6,200 lights in Fort Smith, for a total budget of $1,085,000.

Following the 188th steering committee’s weekly conference call with members of the Arkansas congressional delegation, we have decided to extend the deadline for writing letters to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta through next week.

We have 2 reasons for extending the deadline:

1.    Next week’s calendar does not present the opportunity for a logical “triggering” event for presenting the letters to Secretary Panetta. Staffers are still in the information-gathering stage of the process.

What is the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce Annual “Healthy Workplace” Award?

The Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce “Healthy Workplace” awards will be presented an annual Chamber event after the nominations are judged and scored.  These awards were created to extend appreciation and to recognize businesses that show a commitment to health and wellness.  They also serve to publicly promote the importance of a healthy workplace in the Greater Fort Smith Region.

The Center for Business and Professional Development at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is offering several non-credit classes and workshops in March with the first one starting on March 7.

The classes are intended to help increase employers’ and employees’ productivity and competitive stance in a global marketplace, according to Pat Eller of Fort Smith, the director of the Center.
